Cycling Events in Snowy River Country

 

 

 Day 1 • Wilderness Coast • 25 km or 35km.

Explore coastal heathland, banksia woodland, remote beaches and coastal inlets east of Cape Conran. Extend the ride to enjoy a brew at the coastal village of Bemm River. NB Two ride options each day, easy, or longer and more challenging!

Day 2 • Heritage Rivers • 52km or 62 km.

Self drive 30 minutes north from Cape Conran on bitumen and good quality gravel roads to start the ride. Climb through fertile river valleys and productive foothill forest whilst catching views of distant mountains and coastline. Descend to nationally significant rainforest overhanging the Arte and Goolengook heritage rivers. Investigate controversial forest management areas in the Goolengook River catchment.

Day 3 • Cabbage Tree Palms and Snowy River Estuary • 42 km or 56 km

Coast west of Cape Conran and take in great ocean views and the Snowy River estuary. Head north through eucalypt forest to Cabbage Tree Creek where you can explore warm temperate rainforest and see the only natural forest of Cabbage tree palms in Victoria. Those who like a challenge take the rocky track to Mt Raymond and be rewarded by spectacular views of the Snowy River estuary, surrounding river flats and lakes.

Preparing for the ride

The ride is aimed at recreational cyclists who can comfortably ride at least 60 km per day including extended hill climbs and unsealed roads. Riders from 8 years to 68 years of age have enjoyed our rides, after appropriate training. We advise that you train carefully in the lead up to the ride to ensure you are fit enough to really enjoy it! Training advice can be found on our website and will be provided with confirmation of entry. This event takes place in remote country where rapid weather changes may cause riders to experience extremes of temperature from very cold and wet, to hot and humid conditions, sometimes in the space of a single day.

Conran is a magnificent place to bring non riding partners and friends, The Cape Conran Coastal Park offers a variety of opportunities for walkers. Many shorter walks can be taken around the Cape itself or there are longer walks for the more adventurous. There are kilometres of magnificent white sandy beaches to ramble along. The Cape Conran Coastal Park is located 420km east of Melbourne. The park is 11,000 hectares in area, encompassing Point Ricardo in the west and Sydenham Inlet to the east. Fishing, bird watching, swimming, rock pool exploring and many other activities make this a great place to visit any time. Getting to Conran • Cape Conran can be reached via the Princes Highway turning off at Cabbage Tree Creek in the east or via Orbost and driving through Marlo to the west. • Train from Melbourne to Bairnsdale daily, with connecting coach service to Orbost. • Convenient bike transport service from Bairnsdale to Orbost can be provided by a local courier. • Contact Wilderness Bike Ride for further details.
